I'm doing a science fair project using the title "Does _______ grow more effectively in rich soil, sand, or water?"

However, I'm not sure as to what plant/fruit/etc. to use for my project. Ideally, I'd like something that would grow rather quickly and is easy to measure/record and keep track of. Also it should be able to grow in various agents such as water, soil, sand, etc.

Can anybody please help me? Any ideas?

Thank You in Advance!

well, i dont know how long time you have for your project, but unless it is several months i wouldnt go for legumes. they have quite big seeds so they can get their nurinents from their seeds at the beginning. then they have the nitrogen fixation trait which too makes them independent on soil nutrient content to some degree (the nitrates). how about mustard seeds. they grow fast and are ROUTINELY used for such tests - FOR A REASON. believe me, you will like mustard. it gives good response to various conditions. if not available, get raddish, it is more or less the same. dont foget to have the control runs for all tested factors- like if you test factor a and factor b so you need A, B, A and B and no A no B, that is four runs. and use at least 30 seeds for each to make you results statistically significant - for these you can have all 30 in one dish or pot. good luck

beans are awesome. they grow quickly and are very easy to take care of. just make sure you put some sticks or dowel into the soil so the plants can wrap around whiel growing to avoid drooping and broken stems.

I don't know about the time element but Melons grow well in sandy soil. They are relatively easy to tend and measure without damaging them. Watermelons or cantaloupe are good.

There is a kind of Ivy that grows like wildfire indoors but I dont remember the name of it. Check at Walmart in plant section and ask someone there about your situation.

why dont you just use beans? any kind, most preferably red or green beans. i have tried growing them on cotton pads soaked in water and they usually grow to about 5-7 cm tall after only about 2 days.
