The rule of thumb is dogs should not be kept in their crates for longer than 4 hours at a time, unless they are say sleeping at night than I can see keeping a dog crated/kenneled longer. Dog's need to potty more often that every 12 hours! It's cruel to cage a dog for 12 + hours. Dogs need to be walked, allowed to potty, fed on a schedule and just hang around their favorite humans to be happy. Your roommate should try hiring a dog walker or take the pooch to doggie day care.

Depending on the age of the dog....if its a puppy only an hour or two and can eventually be taught to stay in longer but never that long....that means he is going to the bathroom in his kennel and not eating for 12 hours....

Dogs are very social animals and your roomates dog is suffering
greatly by being locked away in solitary confinement 12 hrs a day.
You are absolutely correct....
How many hours would your roomate like to be locked in the bathroom every day ?

What kind of KENNEL are we talking here??? a CRATE or a free standing kennel..My show dogs are in their kennels ALL DAY
while I am at work...they vary in size from 10' x10' to 6' x 24 '
and many sizes inbetween...this assures me that they get
plenty of exercise...When I am home they are with me and often
get to go to work with me...they sleep in the house..except for
babies that sleep in their crates UNTIL they are completely
housebroken and can be trusted NOT to chew!

ANYTHING OVER 4 HOURS IN THE DAY IS ABUSE. and around 8 hours at night is more than enough sleep. if they get a good play work out every day.if a person works an 8 hr. day it would work best to have someone run the dog at lunch time. if impossible then run in the am before work, then after work play hard for a 1/2 hour. never skipping a day.

8 hours max. Puppies less since they can't control their bladder or bowels. Besides dogs need to run & play not be stuck in a crate all day & night. If I were you I'd find a home for the dog & tell the room mate what you did & why. Or if they can't handle the truth, say you took it for a walk, it got loose & hit by a car.

if this is an everyday thing thenI'd be asking the roommate why they have a dog in the first place, it would seem stupid to own a dog and only lock it up and never see it, plus it's not fair to the dog he/she could be at a better home where they only get locked for 4-5 hours and have kids and a mommy to love them.

Since it's your roommate can you get the dog out while you are home? I think 12 hours is definitely TOO long. Tell your roomie what all the people on this site said!
