I lived in LA for 16 years and loved taking out of town friends around. It was a chance to show them that what you see on tv isn't real - the gang side and the glamour side. It's the same as in any big city. You're gonna find crime and bad people who want to take advantage of tourists. But there are also great things to see and do and as long as you keep your eyes open, you'll be safe and have a great time.

When you get there, don't be shy about asking locals what they would recommend. Unlike other cities, LA people love being asked what's attractive about the city. They won't be rude and look at you like you have 3 heads because you're talking to them. Any chance to brag about the city is welcomed by most people and it will give you real insight that no bookstore guide can offer you.

Well, first are you coming for a visit or to live? L.A. is very spread out. You'll want to avoid the more urban areas like Downtown, South Central, & East L.A (unless you're on a guided trip). If you're visiting touristy places, you shouldn't have a problem if you use common sense. The westside of Los Angeles (the beach area) doesn't have much of the crime you've heard about (gang-related crimes, I'm assuming). I'd avoid places like Hollywood Blvd. It's a big tourist trap and full of vagrants and sleazy types.

If you're coming to live in L.A., the most frequent crime you're likely to experience is car theft. Like I said, use common sense. Lock you doors & windows, don't walk down dark & deserted alleys. Don't flash gang signs ;)

There is lots to do in Los Angeles. It really depends on what you like to do.There are great night clubs in Hollywood, there is hiking in the local mtns, and Venice Beach on the weekend is a sight all by itself. You can see live bands at many venues. Make sure you pick up a copy of the LA Weekly, its a free newspaper full of things to do.

Whatever you do, dont listen to spotted puppy, lol. She is obviously a hater.

I lived in Glendale, while working on a temporary assignment. I worked in an office building near McArthur Park. In the two months I was there, I had no problems with anyone. I liked Glendale, especially the Galleria. I walked from the Holiday Inn to downtown Glendale just about every night. Traffic was not even a problem for me.

A tourist has to treat LA like a donut. Travel the edges and stay out of the middle. Attractions are in the suburbs. Hollywood is like sailing down a sewer in a glass bottom boat.

It's no worse than any other major city......just don't go to the dodgy parts at night! Stick to the touristy places, keep your wits about you, and there's no reason why you should need to be particulary worried

Yup. It's bad. Druggies, hookers, drunks, prostitutes, you name it. It's not everything the hollywood stars make it up to be.

Los Angeles (LA, the lazy nickname) sucks.

Ask a taxi-driver to take you to the better part of it, well away from the gang-land areas.
