but about 1/4 of them are damaged. Is there a program that can try to look for fragments of these files and fix them?

After deleting them, did you install anything else?
If do, there are some chanses that they are lost, but dont lose hope.
Try retriving them with the tool that can be found in tune up utilities 2006.

If you created new files on your hard disk e.g. by installing new software or increased and sizes of existing files very siginificantly the hard disk areas of the deleted files may get allocated to the new data and therefore your old file parts are gone.
