I am planning on building a community centre. I have a written description of what I want, but I'm not sure about how to go about producing a visual representation

Architects and draftsmen use a drawing board and T-square, along with drawing paper and many assorted drawing instruments, tools and lead pencils.
It is an art form that takes years to learn.
You could look for someone who is a CAD designer. Computer Aided Drafting. The draftsman has a software program and computer screen. He can make the drawings on the screen, then make prints.
Try doing a Yahoo! search under CAD Designs or Computer Aided Drafting. If you find someone near you, you can explain your design then see it as it is developed on the screen.

The actual design is best left to experts, but still a visualition of what you are after is not a bad idea.

First you want to get as many people involved in the project to sit down with you so that you can work on it together.

Maybe you could work on two drawings, a plan and a front elevation. These will be concept drawings and may be of use to the architect who actually does the drawings, the main thing is to think of everything. How big do you want the rooms?
Where do you want storerooms? What about disabled access? toilet? deliveries, offices, and so on

Make a plan of your ideas, don't worry about it being neat. It is the Architect's to sort out what you want and put it into a form the constructors can understand.

You may also draw the front facade in what is known as elevation, to give an idea of what you expect people to see as they approach the entrance.

As it is a community project you are doing you may consider setting a competition for the front facade and getting a local business/es to sponsor a prize
