Whisky is a liquor produced by distilling an ale made from malted barley. The distillate is then aged in oak casks for a period of time up to the distiller.
Scotch is a whisky where the water, malt, and barley (usually dried over peat moss) are all from Scotland and where the distillation (typically in a copper "pot" style still) and casking is also done in Scotland.
The term 'whisky' derives from the Gaelic language, one of the ancient tongues of Scotland and Ireland. 'Usquebaugh', translated, means water of life.

Scotch is basically a subset of whisky, similar to Irish whisky or Bourbon. There are two main varieties of Scotch: single malt and blended. Single malts come from a single distillery and blends consist of whiskies from more than one distillery.

Scotch is Scottish whisky (pls note the spelling), it is only spelt whiskey in Ireland and America. It has a different texture and taste and is brewed differently from different materials to other whiskeys including America, rye, bourbon, scotch and of course your Irish.

Legally (by treaty) Scotch whiskey must be made in Scotland. Similarly, tequila must be made in Mexico. Traditionally, bourbon is made in or near the Bourbon region of Kentucky.
Practically, Scotch whiskey has a characteristic, unique smoky flavor because of how the malt is roasted: over open peat fires.

Scotch is a type of whiskey made in Scotland. Try it. It's just like drinking your most awful medicine when you were a kid, only ten times worse. It is singularly the most horrible tasting liquor on the shelf.
