Why should this prediction be any different than the hundreds that have preceded it? Really, I'm not making a smart remark...when you constantly get bad info, you need to stop putting any trust at all in the source of that info. Don't even listen, its a waste of your time.

An educated opinion?

Well, let's look at the facts:

The world was supposed to end Dec. 31, 1999.

It didn't.

The world was supposed to end June 6, 2006. (06/06/06).

It didn't.

Now, the "belief" is that since the Mayan calender ends on 2012, the world will end in 2012.

Here's my question: The Mayans could predict the end of the world being 2012, but not their own extinction?

My answer: No. The world will not end in 2012. It will not end in 2027. It will not end for a VERY VERY VERY long time.

2012 isn't actually the end of the world in Mayan prophecy, as commonly believed. It is actually just the end of the age we're in, and Mayans believed a new age of some sort would begin in 2012. I saw a show about it on the History Channel once. It had something to do with the Milky Way galaxy lining up with some other galaxy or some astronomical stuff.

Not in 2012 but several billion years down the line when the sun expands to a red giant and swallows the earth. That will be the real end of the world.

Nope. The world has been here for billions of years. It won't suddenly burp to death in the next 6 years.
Even if you're talking the human population......even if there were total global warfare I doubt that it could get every last 7-billion-strong one of us.
Even if humans screw up the world beyond human habitation and as a species we go extinct (would to God we did), the world will still go cycling on without us. Maybe cockroaches would rule the world, maybe cyanobacteria would. But hot or cold, dry or wet, high or low.........life is pretty damn indomitable. It finds a way to exist in the most inhospitable of conditions even if it has to be at a hydrothermal vent in the ocean floor or in the form of an iceworm living inside of a glacier.

Jehovah's Witnesses and other groups have given their doomsday predictions for years. None of Joseph Smith's predictions panned out either. Even the biblical references were wrong as they thought the end was immanent. There is an asteroid that will be coming close in the year 2027 or around there, otherwise, there are no logical conclusions for the world to end. When each of us die the world ends for us. Otherwise, there is no basis for any logical prediction.

No D R, the world will not end in 2012. No one knows when the end of time will be. No one.

There are a lot of things that could go wrong in the world between now and 2012. Nuclear war, catastrophic meteor impact, pandemic, the list goes on and on. Many of the predicted causes, however, seem to have a fairly low probability, but you never know. I'm not going to waste a lot of time and energy on it.

from a catholic standpoint Id say no

"no man knoweth the day nor the hour of the end"

Id look for the signs of the times,
4 horsemen and the other 3 seals and everything else.;

watch in the news for a man with the mark of the beast on either his hand or forehead, (666) it will be sometime soon
