Well, if they stink, then there is probably an infection, either yeast or bacterial. If there is brown sticky like stuff in there, then there is definately an infection. The most common ear infections are yeast infections. The best thing to do is see a vet, let them diagnose the problem, flush out the ears, and get you medication. I recommend this first and foremost, however, you can get a mild ear cleaner and clean the ears yourself. For yeast infections, I swear by the over the counter vaginal yeast infection medications. It is the same type stuff your vet will give you for an ear yeast infection, however, it does not take care of bacteria if it is present. One other thing you need to consider is ear mites.

You can get ear cleaner from your vet or a pet shop - you put a few drops on a piece of cotton wool and clean the ear out. You can also get ear wipes which do the same thing.

If the ears are very stinky and look quite waxy though I'd go along to the vet as the dog might have an ear infection or ear mites.

I am a dog groomer and if a dogs ears are smelling you can be assured they have an ear infection. So off to the vet you go for a proper check and possible drops, which will soon clear up the problem.

Infections can be caused by water getting in the ear and not drying quickly. Bacteria forms and hey Presto - a good candidate for an infection.

Allways keep their ears dry.

Another thing to watch for if they have an infection is that they do not shake their heads continuously with the irritation as they may well burst the small blood vessels in the ears and the ears swell with blood. More money spent at the vets.

Tea tree dog wipes from Pets at Home are pretty good and work on my old golden retriever, I clear her ears twice a week with them and have never had any trouble with stinky ears, but if you dog has ears that are stinky then you should take it to the vets for a check up, it could be a bacterial infection and its not something you should mess about with on your own, drops and antibiotics could be the answer to this problem, good luck.

There are many oily based products especially for this problem. I do my dog's ears each time we bath her. Usually if she is smelly, the smell is actually only coming from the ears.

The products are available either from the vets, or off the shelf in pet stores. Neither seem to be better than the other.

I tend to clean the ears in between baths with a spot of olive oil on a soft cotton pad. This also seems to do the trick.

Stinky ears are a sign of infection. Time for a trip to the vet.

In case you didn't know, if you bath your dog, NEVER get water in their ears as their ear goes straight down instead of horizontal like ours so when water gets in their ears it's there to stay unless you get medical help.

Vets for ear drops, there are no good home remedies. Teach your dog to sit while you clean out his ears with the drops on a cotton bud, and make sure you get it properly cleaned up before you stop the medication.
It can turn into a serious inner ear infection.

The best thing to do is take it to the vet of course, but if you don't have the money to do that now,try this:mix together equal parts of rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, and plain vinegar.Put several drops in each ear, massage into ear canal, then clean out with cotton balls and Q-tips.This will help to dry the ear canal and also help to kill fungus(yeast)and bacteria.Do it everyday until theres improvement, then twice a week.Try adding some yogurt to your dogs diet as well;it will help with the yeast.
