Alright, i have a chihuahua that is 5 months old. Lately he has had awful breath. I know it can be because of a tooth problem and all so no need to tell me to take him to the vet for its his teeth...i know! Ok, well, I was wondering if it could be because he's going through the stage of losing his baby teeth and getting the adult ones. Could that possibly be his awful breaths cause? Again, i know he will have to go to the vet more than likely but i want an idea of what it could be if anyone knows. Serious answers only!

thanks!! 10 pts to the most informative and helpful..(oh and no website links if possible too, unless its absolutely necessary!)

He was wormed last time he went to the vet about a month or a little over ago to get his shots, and he has no fleas, doubt that matters just thought id mention it. He weighed 3.7 pounds last time he went in and weighs about 5 or so pounds now, not sure the exact weight. He goes in in the next few months to get neutered.

Teething puppies often have bad breath, but this is usually normal and passes after teething is completed.< http://www.puppychow.com/Grooming/Pet_Odor.aspx

He is getting several of his adult teeth at this age, and many times the gums get swollen, and red..so infection may set in... Please check his gums for excessive redness..If all looks OK, he is likely just fine, and the odor will soon be gone..

It is a good time for these teething toys> http://www.dog-supplies-advisor.com/puppy-teething-toys.html

Well, a 5 month old dog shouldn't have any type of dental disease at such a young age. Look into your puppies mouth and inspect every tooth, the gums, under the tongue, and back of the throat to be sure he hasn't eaten something that is stuck in his mouth and causing an infection. This happened to a friend of mine recently and the dog had a tack stuck in the back of his throat. Also consider what you are feeding him. He's old enough to eat dry puppy food if he already isn't. And yes, losing baby teeth can cause an odor from the blood, but shouldn't be like what you are describing.

a lot of the time its the diet. try only high quality puppy kibble and water !. no goodies, people food , canned food is the worst. find a good tiny breed puppy food and do only that . even if you moisten with water only. it will "sweeten" his bowel and also his breath. it comes from the tummy when its not bad teeth. he is not old enough for bad teeth. and teething should not stink unless he has a tooth that should be out and wont leave!? good luck.

I is probably because of the food he is eating so just change his foods or buy different brands until his breath stop stinking or brush his teeth or use dog mouthwash and just in case bring him to the vet.

Yes that could be a cause but look at the back of his teeth...is there junk...if so u need to buy a tooth brush and dog toothpaste...and it helps with the breath.

Yes your pup is going through alot of changes. Losing baby teeth, his body is still adjusting to not nursing. He is becoming a dog. That's why everyone says that "puppy breath stinks" You can make sure that he has one specific diet, and that he gets baths. My min pin just got over that stage and she is finally smelling better. But try to enjoy this stage, because once they get over this stage they learn to roll in things that smell alot worse than puppy breath.

Since he's so young he probley has food stuck to his teeth, now is a good time to introduce the toothbrush and get him use to regular brushing. This will not only help maintain his teeth for old age it'll save you money on vet teeth cleaning and extractions! Does he like rawhide and dentibones? they help clean teeth too and will help with the teething pain and detructive puppy chewing! Good luck!

I never heard of puppy breath smelling foul, it would suggest rotten food stuck between teeth maybe. Or he's eating something foul such as cat mess.
Even if we know 10 reasons why this could happen, we can't see your dog and so we can't say 'its definately this'. You live with him and you can't figure it out! Get him checked!

when was the last time this puppy was wormed??? Losing
baby teeth should NOT cause bad breathe but having a case
of round worms definately could...As most pups are born with
round worms perhaps the breeder did not get rid of them all..
Take a fresh stool sample to your vet and have it checked..no
reason to take the pup at this time..but do know its weight as worm meds are given according to weight.
