she wont really remember it, but you could dip her feet or hands in paint and frame the picture so that in years to come she`ll know you did something memorable for her first birthday

She is very young and the best thing you can give her is lots of love and attention and have a fun day celebrating together.
During the day you could take her to the park, woods, stroll along the beach, to meet some other Mums with their tots, something you know she would enjoy and that would make her happy.
Make sure she has a nap and don't get overtired and grumpy that would spoil the rest of the day.
You could then organise a small party with family and friends needn't cost much if you request that each bring a plate of food to share. Play the usual fun games that tots enjoy - Oranges and Lemons, Ring a ring a rosies, etc. Music and dance and fun is what it's all about.
If your funds allow do try and bake or organise a cake for her. Perhaps a family member would like to do this for you. Again keep it simple, you could even put a standard candle in it in order to acknowledge her 1st birthday - this would make a great picture - your daughter trying to blow out the big candle stuck in the middle of a cake.
You could take lots of photographs and then when you have the funds available have a special one framed for her and then start of a scrapbook of her life from 1 onwards that you could give to her when she is older. If youhave friends and family over you could have some paper available for them to write a special message for her 1st birthday that you could include in the book. Peers could add their handprints or whatever. She will cherish that so very much as she gets older.
Whatever you decide to do hope it's memorable for all concerned and the first of many happy celebrations in the future. God Bless.

Good answers from most of the people especially the ones that are saying she wont know what you spend on her anyway.Just remember that if you start with expensive presents then the older they get the more they want and then you will loose all parental control. Look around at today's kids ,have you found any that really appreciate the hard work and worry that you have in trying to raise money for something that they MUST have because their friends have it . Just give your daughter all the love you can and as she grows she will love you back and accept that the gifts you give her are given with love

Have a lunch/dinner/snack party with family and relatives. food is not the main point of the party. The quality time spent with the whole family and celebrate together is the thing. Take some pictures and put it in an album. They will know they had a good time when they're older looking back the pictures.

She is very young to really know what a birthday is so just make it a lovely day anyway and how about opening her a post office account or similar with a few pounds and then you can build on that as and when for her future. You will get interest on it and it will soon grow over the years, just like your little girl.

Have a party in the park...perhaps there is a gazebo or pavilion..Does not have to be fancy. You can get paper goods at the dollar store. Invite all of your friends with small children and have a blast. Take pictures from a borrowed camera or have friends take pic and you pay for developing the pics. You can write her a love letter every year and put in her baby book about that year of her life and some the wonderful changes and memories you want her to know about. Love and memories cannot be bought nor sold. Whatever you do, try to convey how special she is.

In all honesty she's one she's not gonna remember or even know what is going on, have family over and have a cook out and cake...the parties at this age are more for the parents anyway...she's way too young to really understand..get her some toys and she'll be happy

think about this...do you personally remember what your mum got you for ur 1st birthday. Coz without pictures i honestly would not have known what my parents got or did 4 me on my 1st birthday.
Just try and have the ppl who matter most around and take loads of pictures. That should make it extra special and you could even frame one of the nicer picture of you and her together and frame it to give her later in life. Im sure that will be a memory that she'll cherish forever coz i know i certainly would.

As others have said she won't remember, buy her a little something to open, take lots of photos, make a cake and maybe take her out to the park or a soft play area.
Spend time with her.
Hope she has a lovely day

make her a cake, do a few sandwiches and invite a few friends, after all she is only 1 and won't remember anything of it anyway and she won't realise if you don't get her anything just being there for her is enough, i didn't do much for my 2 son's 1st birthday lack of money etc cuz like i said they were only 1 and didnt know anyway you can make it up to her when she is older and you are better off financially and she will be aware of what you have done for her

My son turned 1 yesterday. As bright as he is, he had absolutley no idea it was his birthday. Anything you do will really be more for your memories & there's nothing wrong with that I might add. We're having his party this Saturday. We marked the day by Daddy staying home. We had planned to take him to the beach but it was a bit hot. We had family over later that night & he had his first happy meal (the healthy choices menu of course!). He loved the presents but had no idea why he got them.
