Warm, wet cloths help to get the goop out of the eyes, but the only way to get rid of the infection, and keep yourself or others from getting it, is to go to the doctor and get a prescription for antibiotics. If your child attends a daycare center, you will be required to show proof that your child has had drops for 24 hours before they will be readmitted to the school (to eliminate the risk of contamination to other children). You should notify the school immediately so they can post a warning to other parents that their child may have been exposed to this risk. Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is VERY contagious, so make sure to wash your hands every time you put in drops, and wash your child's hands if he rubs his eyes. With the drops, you should see results within half a day, and the risk of infection will be gone in 24 hours.

Polysporin cream available over the counter in pharmacies-about $8.
Keep using for about three days after infection has cleared and wash all towels, pillowcases and other items the boy has had contact with.
Keep his hands very clean and try to discourage his rubbing the eyes.

No, you really need to take him in to get drops. Saline drops will not get rid of the infection, and I would take him asap before it affects his vision.
