Does he like sitting on the potty? If he does - get a musical one that plays a tune when he tinkles. Seriously = it works wonders. My son hated the potty and went straight to the toilet using one of those add-on seats and a stool. He simply preffered it - I think it was more grwon up and he's always been an indepedant soul! The only other suggestion is to let him run about with no nappy or those special training pants that pull down quickly as much as possible so that if/when he is needing to go he can do so with little fuss and less accidents.

He may not be quite ready yet. My son is a few months older then yours. But this is what worked for me.............This might sound kind of cruel but this summer when it was nice and warm and I knew that he was ready to be potty trained, I did not put diapers, underwear, or pants on him at all it the house. He would wear just a t-shirt that was a little longer than usual. Any way . . .this worked great for my son because he didn't want to go on the floor so he went in the potty. This only took about 2 weeks to potty train him. I just kept a close eye on him during those 2 weeks and when he was looking like he needed to go I would put him on the potty until he started sitting on the potty himself. Now I have him in underwear. Once in a while he still has an accident but he is doing very well.

I have 4 siblings so I really know this question. My baby sister is 3 1/2 and still has to be taught to potty train. My advice from me is if he goes potty give him praise and a small treat and if he spills give him a slap on the bottom. All 5 of us were at least 3 before potty trained so give him some more time. When you force him to go but has lots of spills and doesn't get it he won't learn it, but if he is at the right age he should be good in a month. Hope it works!

Ok, I had quite the time trying to potty train my daughter. At first, every 15-20 minutes I would take her to the bathroom and sit there until she went or started to complain. It did work, but you have to be consistant. My daughter never liked using little kid potties so she always used the big potty. After that, whenever I was at home for a while I would just let her go completely naked and she knew better than to go pee or poop right on herself. It worked for me and I think it would work for others.

you must be consistant with the potty training..and make sure you do it the same way over and over...my husband calls me the potty training nazi...because my girls were both trained before they were 1 year old..I felt if they were smart enough to realize what they wanted they were smart enough to walk themselves to the potty..and they both were done right away. place a regular panty and a plastic over them..for accidents..allow for accidents then you get firm. now incentives help.alot..and you wont have anyproblems..have a jar of M&M's and they will go even though they dont have to..because they want an M&M and that is ok...they are practicing to go...but dont give them anything unless they use it..for real..or make a treasure chest with toys they like ..whistles or other things like bracelets..and that helps...I know you will probably be in the restroom awhle but i know you will be able to teach them quick...good luck..

potty training is the pitts. I set a timer for every 15 min. When it went off, she knew to sit on the potty. She loves chocolate so she got 1 hershey kiss for pee and 2 for poops! Expect lots of accidents. When they do have an accident, make no big deal about it, just clean it and move on....

21 months? Wow... you're ambitious. My son is 3, and he's still reluctant to sit on the potty. We use pullups, and we try to get him to sit down every hour. One of the things our pediatrician told us to do is use a specific "special" potty candy that he only gets when he does something on the potty. We use those little candy coated hershey kisses. Our son calls them his "potty candy", and he will go sometimes if we offer him the candy.

This is a bit young to begin potty training -- just RELAX, and take the cue from your son -- he will start walking to potty (just show him what it is, where his seat is, and the step stool) -- and that is what is best. Rush it -- and all you will be is frustrated, and the child will be upset and anxious about pottying.

21 months is pretty young... he's still under 2 years old. Its common for kids not to be potty trained all the way into the 3's. I wouldn't force it, but you can try to get him interested... but don't force it. You'll know when he's ready.
When he is ready, try putting cheerios in the toilet and having him sink them (when he learns to pee standing up lol).

21 months old is generally considered too young for potty training.
