I mean, grammatically speaking, a lot of the English language is just confusing if you go by the "rules".

It seems like people who use "Hooked on Phonics" would still have trouble reading.

English is a completely typical language. Anyone who says otherwise knows NOTHING about language or languages. English has exceptions to the rules just like every other language and in no greater measure than any other language. The English spelling system is a problem, but that's NOT the language (that's the "Hooked on Phonics" problem you mention). English is NOT a "mongrel" language, whatever that idiot meant by the term. English is a completely Germanic language, no more, no less. It is just like every other human language, easy for some to learn, hard for others to learn. Get off the English bashing. It's not a perfect language, but then, NO language is a perfect language.

Grammar is necessary for anyone who learns a foreign language and also for those who want to know how their native language works. No matter what language you learn, you need to know about its structure - and this structure is explained in Grammars.

You can only appreciate the beauty of a language -or any language for that matter- when you have gone into it's history and origin of its words. Each word has a little history of its own and if you just study it a little more you will find it very interesting indeed.

Ancient Greek grammars (and also Latin grammars later on) had a huge influence on English.

The same goes for grammar rules. Ancient Greek grammars (and also Latin grammars later on) had a huge influence on English. There are reasons for the rules in grammar in any language. If your conversation is full of mistakes your ideas will not get across easily.

If you study the grammar rules they will certainly help you speak the language more accurately and you can effectively get your ideas across. The grammar rules make communication effective and understood. It also helps you to produce good writing.

Phonics gives people the tools needed to sound out words. There are exceptions to those rules but it is easier to learn those exceptions than it is to try to memorize how to read every word in the English language without Phonics.

I've heard that English is one of the hardest languages to learn to speak correctly. You're right, there's not a lot of logic in some of the "rules", and it's just a matter of memorizing them.

The English language has roughly 60 letter combinations and about 1200 ways to pronounce them. You just have to learn them that's all. I learned english at 19 and I think it was rather a good thing, I didn't learn by osmosis, I studied it. Plus 60% of its vocabulary derives directly from French so that puts me way ahead.

English is a mongrel language -- a hodge podge importing words and rules from diverse sources, and many rules contradict other rules or require many exceptions. That's what makes it so fun.
