Of course they can be happy and functional without their faith, but they can be happy and functional with it too, with the added bonus of fitting into a large community of equally delusional people who reinforce each other's beliefs. I have been much happier and more functional since I kicked the Bearded One and his henchmen to the curb about a year ago. Marx said that religion is the opiate of the people, and I agree. While the statement was obviously not meant to be taken literally, studying the mechanics of addiction does shed some light on the question of why religious people cling to their delusions, give money to their churches, get nasty when challenged. What's really sad about it is that they are not insane.

You may change your tune someday when you face a problem you can't handle. I thought I was doing fine until a member of my family faced a serious illness. I realized that I couldn't help them and came very close to a breakdown. Fortunately, some Christians had prayed for me and talked to me about the Lord. The Lord mercifully helped me that day and lifted the burden right off my shoulders. I really felt like a hundred pounds came off my back that day that I trusted Christ. If this is insanity and delusional, then I'm all for it. That was many years ago, The Lord has been with me since that day and I am truly a changed person. I don't miss the drugs, booze, etc. This is what life is really about. I hope you don't miss out. I'll pray for you.

Not a fictional charecter, but in the ONE TRUE LIVING GOD! You, sir, have the problem. I can not function one instant without Him! Why all the hostility? I don't believe in the tooth fairy, but I don't go around hating that in which I don't believe.

Why can't you accept the fact that EVRYONE has the right to believe in or dis-believe what ever they want, without being rude or disrespectful? I mean is it necessary to put someone down, just because you don't agree with them? Can't you act like a mature adult, or are you afraid were right?

Why does it bother you?
Why does it matter to you what someone else believes?
Also, before getting on the soapbox, Atheists are a minority.
By the way, spellchecker makes you look less like an idiot.

i can function quite well with or without my belief in god ... as an ex atheist i have proven this
i can only say though that my belief in god has not affected who i am ... but has affected my outlook in life and my attitude to others in a more positive way .. which in my opinion can never be a bad thing
and I'm most definitely sane :o)
