Poconos in PA. Since this is your first time, try out a KOA Campground (www.koa.com) for some sites.

For places to camp near NYC your best bet are the state park system. If you have ample time to drive, I'd suggest southern Jersey at their state parks.

Any kind of 3-season tent will do for you. You can spend hundreds or go to Wal-Mart and get a cheap one. One thing you need to do if you go the cheaper route is buy Seam-Grip and treat all the sewn seams. You'll probably need 2 tubes. Treat the tent and let it air out for 24 hours outside in the sun.

I'd invest in a Therm-a-rest to sleep on. It's the difference between just a night's sleep and a good night's sleep.

For sleeping bags, all you have to remember is to add 20 degrees onto it's rating. A 20 degree sleeping bag is really used comfortably in 40 degree weather. Do some research and see how cold it will get. You can also increase the rating of a bag if you line it with a fleece blanket on the inside.

Hope this helps you out. Have fun!!

For a place to camp - "Catskill state park" - If you're just going for a day or two, buy a two man "pup" tent...A 20 degree bag would work well, you can always ventilate by unzipping if you're a little warm...
