This likely happened because of the trauma of whatever sent them into a coma in the first place. It's not unheard of, a severe shock or trauma changing a persons hair to solid white in an amazingly short time. It won't take color, don't bother.

Anyones hair can instantly turn white from extreme shock. Its pretty amazing. Scientist still can't really explain it. I went to school with a boy who this happened to, his hair eventually started turning back to brown. It is still hair and can be colored. Try a different color.
