According to the Bible, Jesus only believed that divorce was only justified on the grounds of sexual infidelity. As Jesus stated : “It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.” (Matthew 5:31-32)

As you can see Jesus does not have the liberal allowances for divorce that modern society does. Read in context, Jesus was telling the Jewish men of the time, who could divorce at will, that aside from adulterous behavior on the part of the spouse, divorce was simply not allowed, and to actually follow through with a divorce not only makes their wife guilty of adultery, but also forces the person who marries your divorced spouse into an adulterous situation. Hence, the one who initiates a divorce is guilty of causing adultery on two counts.

These are pretty strong words. The only thing that disturbs me about Jesus’ absolutism concerning this issue, is that there are other reasons for divorce that have moral merit. What if a wife is being subjected to spousal abuse of the kind, where her life, or the lives of her kids, maybe in danger. Is it legitimate to stay in a marriage in this situation then? Wouldn’t the greater moral imperative be to divorce the husband to save oneself and those of ones children?

Its instances like this that demonstrate that sometimes man has to go beyond the literal precepts of the Bible in order to decipher what is right and wrong in a situation.
