Yes, something is on the way. I know of two teams of researchers, one in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, and one in Cambridge, Massachusetts, both of whom are working on flexible screen technology. They have the capability for large, sharp monochome displays that can be rolled up and put in your pocket. What's needed to complete the picture is an appropriate signal generator that can create the text that will be small and/or flexible enough to combine with this.

DeamWeaver is right. Ultra thin colour LCD displays have been possible since about 1998 when the blue LED was finally invented. The idea was to have disposable LCD papers that could be distributed in the morning and then collected in the evening and then the data reloaded over night. The biggest problem is that currently the semiconductor technology is not advanced enough to get the LCD to bend enough to fold without snapping and destroying the crystals.
With modern mobile devices there is less money available for this kind of research, and so progress has dwindled as modern generations seems less inclined to want the book/paper 3D experience.

It's on the way. The father of a friend of mine is an inventor and he's currently working on a rollable screen of some type which doesn't make the eyes squint. I'm not sure about the features, but I think it will be able to download the latest newspapers and even books.

Hello! what are you on now? duh!! I do believe that a device called a computer was created, and within that computer a programme was made and they named it 'The Internet', which enabled people to communicate from far far away without speaking, and too read without picking up a book or a news paper. Genius!
But on a serious note, If they can create all these virtual games, that you put your self inside, and you play sports, or fight in wars. Then I don't think that virtual newspapers will be too far behind.
They could create a virtual programme in which you pick up and read a paper, and then they feed news from the Internet, and it displays it's self on the virtual pages of the newspaper(well that's what i think).

PPC or Palm with a browser and Wi-fi connection comes close. Then there is one of the new UMPC's (Ultra Mobile PC). They have the advantage of a slightly larger screen size and a full XP operating system. The downside to UMPC is the price (circa £1000). I've yet to see one in the flesh.
Personally I use my pc to see news and my Palm to read ebooks and keep organised.

We already have that. We can go onto phones or internet to check the news. The paper is simply convenient, cheap and traditional. I mean, it would be expensive to go down to your local store and buy a touchscreen or something with the news saved on it

Plenty of experimental technologies out there (see below) - though most are more like ultrathin LCD screens than yer actual book at the minute. It wouldn't be quite the same feeling as turning the page though...

Its called a notebook (sometimes called a laptop). Its portable, it's font is adjustable, and it contains all the news the world has to offer. And, its available at a computer store near you!

You may want to check out this article from BBC about how paper sizes are already shrinking and why newspaper companies may or may not explore going to a digital, portable format, a la "Minority Report":

dont see why anybody would want something the size of a paper, but not a paper, the advantage of having a newspaper is that you can screw it up or throw it away so not hard to carry around, something electrical that size would be too delicate and inpractical
