Aren't you assuming that the neighbor is still alive after I assaulted him? ; )

This is an allegory for what Christ did for every person in the world so they aren't talking about a real neighbor..... Along these lines I'll answer (however I agree that I am responsible for my own actions and would take the consequences).

I'd let the neighbor do it because I didn't ask them to do it and it was a gift to me; but I'd visit them everyday and tell them how thankful I was and try to do what I could to help them -- look after their house, feed their pets, cut their grass, etc.

No. I am responsible for all my actions. I knew when I did the crime, that I would have to pay one way or another. Not to mention, I am not a child and do not need a "daddy" to haul me out of trouble. I am a full grown, responsible person and I MAKE MY OWN CHOICES no matter how much I am pushed or bullied. The BUCK stops HERE, always. That's what it means to be an ADULT.

Well look at it this way.

When you do a good deed for someone, do you do it out of the goodness of your heart?

Or do you do it to compensate for the bad you may have done?

When you do a good deed, are you really doing it for yourself?

And if you let your neighbor accept your punishment, would you be doing him a favor?

The neighbor will have to appeal to the judge to modify the ruling.

I think a lot of people would call that neighbor crazy but they would also allow that neighbor (Jesus) to go ahead and take the heat anyway

It all depends on whether you or the neighbour (English spelling) wish to become religious or not. Consider this.

Going to jail is a good way to become a religious believer.

Quite a few violent criminals on death-row seem to suddenly find God (surprise, surprise) so going to jail seems to be a good way to become a religious believer. No wonder so many religious people are violent.
