They are much the same, other than size.. I think the standards are a little better at watchdogging, and the mini's are easier to hold on a lap, or share the bed with...lol

I also own a miniature dachshund. Having met other dachshunds - both standard and miniature - I would not say one is "better" than the other, nor that their temperments are greatly differed. In fact, a lot of dachshunds don't really fall into either true standard or miniature breed standards, as far as height, length, and weight. My own is a few inches over the typical - making him what is known as a "tweenie."

Where you really see the difference in temperment is the coat type. From what I have personally seen and read, there is a bit of a variance between shorthairs, longhairs, and wirehairs. My mini is a longhair, and he is definately much more laid back than many shorthairs I have met. This has something to do with what breeds they were mixed with in order to get the desired coat type a long time ago - for instance, longhairs are believed to have descended from small spaniel types as well as the original shorthair dachshund. Wirehairs are believed to have descended from terrier types, I think, and some of their temperment associations are the same.

Of course, these are generalities. Each dog has an individual personality which may not conform to breed standard or to what the general public assumes of a breed. I have met mean, nasty labradors and absolutely submissive pit bulls.

What it comes down to is - how does the dachshund fit into your lifestyle? Do you need a smaller animal because of a smaller living situation? Or do you have children/other larger pets that might want to rough house?

You advance a Dachshund with little ones they're great. You provide them a backyard to chase lizards in they're chuffed. they're only wonderful with short walks. they have short legs. in case you retain your Dachshund at a good weight on a good nutrients and do not feed human nutrients your Dachshund ought to have a lot less danger of spinal issues. I have 3. Had 4. I foster for a Dachshund rescue. i imagine they're the bomb.

No, the breed standard is the same in every way except for size requirements.

I would recommend a mini for someone who really wanted the smaller sized dog. Other than that, their temperaments, trainability and health issues are quite similar.

they both require basically the same care. you are going to feed a stand more because it weighs more, but its not that much more. standards are longer, too. with both, you need to be careful of their backs! www.drna.org!

Now THAT'S a silly *&* UN-answerable question...

"Better" at WHAT???
"Better" for WHO???

Try again,*after* some thought,OK?

Like..."Will a mini fit in 'chuck-hole?"
"Will a standard hold up in rough terrain longer?"
duh...
