Yes. Prescription drugs like Ambien are hypnotic tranquilizers which are ver potent and completely unrelated to the over-the-counter sleep aids similar to drammamine which just make you drowsy and anxious. They are all bad for you but dependence only occurs in prescription medication.

Yes, there most certainly is. Over-the-counter sleep aids are generally just benadryl while prescription ones are a different kind of chemical that makes your body fall asleep by a different method.

Anything you buy OTC is generally milder and less effective than prescribed meds -- that is if you take them according to directions and don't OD on them. No meds are safe if you abuse them. Some prescription drugs do not have an OTC equivalent, such as narcotics or antibiotics, just to name a couple, and you need a prescription for the first fill and any refills.

Over the counter sleep-aids usually have Benadryl in it to make you sleepy. Prescription sleep-aids don't have that. They have their own ingredients and it can become habit forming.

YES! ambien is very very addictive. I've never had a past history in family or in my past of drug abuse but once I started on ambien I did.
