Because of my agoraphobia I have been unable to work, but I have been denied Social Security benefits. I would like to get better, but I have no money, no current doctor, and no health insurance. Help!

I really feel for you. I have a friend who is going through a similar situation where his mood disorder will not allow him to maintain employment. Please give yourself time to get better. I’ve read that the average time it takes to properly diagnose a mental illness is over eight years.

In the sources section below, I’ve included some links that might be useful. Needy Meds is an information clearinghouse on programs (private, state, and federal) that help people pay for medical care. You can search for medication programs, programs by state, and programs by medical condition. Mood Garden is a site devoted to people with bipolar disorder and other mood disorders. A community like that might help you figure out what to do next. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has offices throughout the country. Local members should be able to provide some guidance. The next link goes to a free clinic search page, and the following one is a search form for free medical care through the Bureau of Primary Health Care.

If you find that you can manage insurance, try MostChoice.com. You can find quotes on health care plans and speak to health insurance agents without charge and with no obligation to buy anything from anyone. HMO plans are really affordable and offer behavioral health services at very reasonable rates.

If there is any university near you with a counseling program, they often have free counseling, in which you'd be working with graduate students in counseling who are closely supervised. That's the cheapest. It may be difficult for you because of the agoraphobia, but it would be something to work up to. Bear in mind that the programs I'm talking about aren't solely for students. Also, they may have a DBT group there that's free or low-cost, and that would help with the BPD. The other thing would be to look into sliding-scale professionals in your community. Depending on the size of your community, you may have a certain number of practitioners who are willing to negotiate fees with you. If you are at all able to do this, this might be a good solution for you also. Any of these individuals (university-linked program or sliding-scale practitioner) may also be able to assist you with appealing the SSI decision, if that's a route you're interested in taking.

If none of this works--I don't know where you live and what the resources are like there--what you might want to do is to look up the community mental health center and speak with them. They may not be able to treat you themselves because usually they're reimbursed through Medicaid or other insurance, but sometimes they have spots for uninsured people, and, even if they don't, they should be able to refer you to a local program in your community that will be able to work with you.

It's not hopeless. I'm willing to bet there are still some treatment options for you. It will take a bit of work to find them, but I think you can do it.

Good luck!
