How sick is this quote from the Bible. Yes I know, the Bible is full of sick violent evil traumatic quotes full of hatred, but is this evil or what?

Matthew 10:37 - "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me".

What decent person (human, divine, almighty or whatever fantasy you care to dream up) would ever ask someone to love them more than they love their parents or children.

Tell me religious people, if you love your parents or children more than anything else, are you committing a sin? Or, are you going to lie and say you love some unknown, unproven fantasy entity more than them?

I do not think I could love anyone more than I love the person that has lived inside my body for the past 4 months (thats right, the unborn one). From the first time I heard it's little heartbeat and saw it on the ultrasound, I was pretty sure I loved this teeny little person more than life itself. Same for my parents, they created me, I cannot love someone I have never seen, met or spoken with more than I love them. My husband too, he is my soulmate..... sorry God.

i love the way religious people explain it all away by claiming "you've taken it out of context."

okay then oh holier than thou super theist. put it in a context that makes SENSE. and yet..they can't.

or they say "He didn't mean it that way."
uhh...excuse me? well then what way DID he mean it...and if he didn't mean it THAT way, why the hell is it written that way.

or they say that the "original Hebrew texts are translated differently" GREAT...then FIX IT.

it all boils down to THIS...religion is only USEFUL if it is CONTROLLING the masses for another's own purpose. brainwashing the masses into submission. so that when people do or say horrid things, they can use the crutch of religion to explain away their actions as okay, and gain support.
it's INSANE! yet...it never fails. why? because people want to belong to something "bigger" than their own puny existence because they can't stomach the thought that this is IT, that our lives are summed up by our deeds today, here on this earth within our physical life time. some of us are remembered forever...in greatness (like Lincoln or Julius Cesar), and others are forgotten.

and to not 'be' anymore, to not "live on" is frightening, more frightening than death itself.

so what do we do? invent some almighty sky daddy that knows all, sees all...and yet never does anything to stop the bad sh!t from happening. and we make up some ridiculous text to explain away all that crap.

ahhh the human imagination...for all the BS in the bible..the human imagination i have to admit is a grand thing indeed.

Maybe.....Matthew was in wrong places of nighttime at its writings and faultered......FORGIVE HIM.
There.....by questioning this verse you are found guilty of being innocent.
But how would you truly know if you've loved your parents or children to the fullest when not knowing a Gods compassion?
When hatred comes back around full circle it develops along the way values of extreme pleasure in loving others to an intensity that ones who already automatically love cannot reach.
Maybe God is just testing your insides in the places where only He can hear to welcome your entrance into Heaven a different way than others.
You are Blessed....thanx for the confusion racing through my mind....your question intrigues me.

FORGIVENESS! Bam!

I take that verse absolutely literally. To me it means that if we think of *anything* in terms of 'I have to have it', then we are indeed committing idolatry. That includes God, oddly enough. See, if we are 'with God' because we need Him, then we love and worship not Him, but our own needs. So that if we then turn around and say that we love and worship Him, we are lying.

If our relationship with any person is based on sentiment or need, and not on the kind of love that is *commanded*, then we love not that person, but our own needs and desires. And if we then turn around and tell ourselves or the person in question that we love them, then we are lying. Pure and simple.

This does not mean we can't have sentiment and enjoy someone's company, but it cannot become something we can't live without. It can't become the motivation for our relationship with the person.

Nor, for that matter, is it OK to 'do the right thing' because we are afraid of what will happen if we don't. Again, if we do that, we are worshiping and loving ourselves and our need not to be punished, and not our neighbor, much less God Himself.

The motivation has to be God. Stripped of all else. The God Who shows us His presence, reveals the truth to us about our actions, and when we understand that some action is improperly motivated, then we just leave it behind and it is nothing but a relief. No condemnation.

This is what Jesus came to give us. See, God actually lives the way I describe above. He does not love us because He needs us or is hoping to 'accomplish something' by doing it. He does so because it arises out of His nature, and He has shown by His actions that He is willing to give up anything for us.

If we are in a love relationship with Him, we become one to such a degree that His will and our will become two sides of the same coin. It is like two friends looking at each other, and then suddenly, two looks (I look at you, you look at me) become one look (we look at each other with only one look).

It is like a child, whom no one will split in two, claiming that the left side is Mom's doing, and the right side is Dad's doing (or vice versa). The things that happen in our lives are like that - we can't tease them apart and isolate which part was God's and which part was ours.

And yet we remain ourselves, just like a man and woman remain themselves when they become one flesh and make a baby together.

I've seemingly wandered away from the topic, and rightly so - it is much more edifying to consider love and do it, not worrying about what anyone else thinks. Then we will find out from experience that God is love... (1 John 4:16)

One more thing: the Bible does not state in vain that it is like a mirror (James 1:22-25). I understand this to mean the following: the Bible uncovers what is in our hearts when we read it. If we have a loving heart, then we will see love. If we do not see love, but rather something else, that is a signal that it's time to take a look at our own hearts, rather than blaming God.

Llama you are pitiful. I feel bad for you. Saying Gods word is crap? When I pray today I want leave you out. I really hope you change your mind before your judgment day!! Love is different
I love my children in a different way that I love my husband and I love my parents in a different way as I love my husband. And I love my god in a different way, but I don't know which one I love most I love them all different but I do love them

Yes I love my parents and my children..and I love them with all my heart..but I love God more, after all He is the One that gave them to me..to understand this one must understand the love of God..which, evendently, you do not.
God is not a fantasy..He is more real than even you are...and one day, you will come to this understanding..whether by free will or judgement...all will be judged according to their works..good or bad.

you are misunderstanding the context. You worship the Lord God first, then your spouse, children, parents ect.
God is not being evil, it's like for example when God's word say's to love your neighbor for example but your spouse is telling you to be mean to the Jones family next door..
You are to honor God and his word above ALL.

It's not a sin to love your family, we are called to love everyone (although that is sometimes very hard).

We are to honor God above all.

Ex. Your kid has a game during church, your kid loves to play, you love your kid and want to take him/her. The right thing to do to honor God is both of you skip the game and go to church.
