I agree with letting the class get to know each other and you too. I think a few mintues of the class asking you questions then the class getting to know each other.

I think you should see what the other teachers are doing. Past experience as a student--the teacher began teaching on day 1.

introduce them to it! and make it fun! just start them out slow! I'm in seventh grade, and I like what my math teacher did! She kind of told us where we are starting out this year and reminded us of some of the things that we did last year! Oh! One of my other teachers "learned about us" by giving us a favorites sheet where we had to fill out some of our favorites! I thought it was smart, and it was really easy! Oh! FYI... DO NOT GIVE HOMEWORK ON THE FIRST DAY! They will absolutely HATE you!

fill out cards w/ needed info. have an ice breaker activity "getting to know you" type thing. discuss the syllabus and take questions.
math the next day, have fun and wishing you a good year!
