Apparently the format has now changed from how it used to be with the sender's address on the right and the recipient's address on the left (slightly lower). I was told that now you're supposed to put everything on the left. Is this true? What order does the mailer's address, recipient's address and the date go?

the recipients address should always go on the top left hand side - the senders address should go on the top right hand side followed 2 lines down by the date - then over to the left 2 lines lower than the date and below the recipients address comes the 'dear sir/madam'

If it has changed, then nobody told me. I'd be surprised to get a letter in the new format you describe, and would probably assume the sender didn't know the correct way of setting it out.
