As of now, i'm 6 foot 3 inches tall and I weight just under 300 pounds. It's not even that I look super fat or huge, but it's very noticable, especially when I go hot tubbing or swimming. I can't seem to get motivated to do anything lately, whether it be just for a bike ride down the street or to go to the gym for half an hour. I find myself drinking far too much soda, and alcohol, but not enough water. I don't eat a ton, but I do not know what is healthy and what is not healthy. I've tried starving myself, going with just one small meal a day but I realized that was unhealthy. I just need some good ol' fashioned advice.

Check out Sparkpeople - http://www.sparkpeople.com.

It's a free website that offers a meal plan (or you can make your own) and a way to track what you eat and how much exercise you get so you can lose weight. It had message boards and articles for advice and support.

Your energy is low because you are too heavy and consuming a lot of bad stuff. As you get fatter, you move less and you end up slowing down your metabolism so you don't have to eat tons to keep gaining weight.

It is WORTH your time to get educated about nutrition. There are a number of diets that work, but unless you make permanent changes, you will just gain it all back and then some. So..you need to develop permanent habits and an eating style that YOU can enjoy.

Weight Watchers has a great program and one of the highest success rates BECAUSE they do educate people about portion control and good choices. That's one option.

Me I prefer South Beach and Atkins but then I like going it alone, and Weight Watchers offers a lot of moral support too. You might prefer that.

As to a few basics that WILL make a difference NOW while you learn how to eat and change your life:

1. The Soda MUST go. It is one of the most dangerous foods available. There is nothing good, and a lot that is bad. Even diet soda is bad (though if you need to make that switch to wean yourself off of all soda...then okay) because the aspartame most are sweetened with makes you hungrier and messes with your body chemistry making you crave more food.

2. Drink the water. You need at least 2 qts a day. It helps to have a quart sized bottle so you can keep track of how much you drink. each day.

Just those two changes will probably take 20lbs off in a few weeks. Other helpful info in the drinking area - some people weaning off soda like the calorie free (or nearly calorie free) flavored waters. You can get both carbonated and non-carbonated varieties. Green tea is good for you but not if it's sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. Look for unsweetened or add a little splenda to unsweetened (or buy something already splenda sweetened). Gatorade and juice drinks are still just empty calories so stay away. Keep your alcohol to a minimum, just a drink or two for special occasions, or a glass of wine with dinner is okay.

-----

2. Get moving. I know you don't feel like it but it's a catch 22, you have to get moving to gain the energy to want to move. Walk, ride, play basketball, go to the gym. At this point ANYTHING is better than nothing.

I told someone on sparkpeople this the other day - Force yourself until it becomes a wanted habit. Just like going to work or school, you don't always want to do it, but you go because you know you have to. At this point, exercise is the same thing. You will regain a love for it in a month or two.

Hope all that helps. You need to get control now or you'll just get sicker and more depressed.

Please, please, please go get yourself a copy of the South Beach Diet and follow it. It is a healthy way to eat forever. It teaches you what are good and bad fats and what are good and bad carbs. There are three phases. The first one is the strictest and I thought it was quite reasonable. Also Phase 1 is only for two weeks. Anyone ought to be able to do something for two weeks. This diet was written by a cardiologist and a nutritionist. It not only helps you get to your optimum weight and stay there, it also regulates your blood chemistry. It helps prevent heart disease and diabetes. If you want to look it over before you buy the book, check it out at the library. If your library doesn't have it, they can get it on an interlibrary loan. You can find inexpensive copies of the book on eBay. There is also a cookbook and a good fat, good carb book to consult when shopping for groceries. Good luck! I know you can do it!

Increase the protein, eat healthier carbs, eat as many veggies as you like, and drink nothing but water. The Alcohol and soda pop is what is doing it to you.

I am trying to lose weight myself and this is the only thing that works... in addition to walking 3 miles a day.

Just remember it took time for your body to gain weight it's gonna take time to lose it too.

Eat less, move more.

Also, just stop buying soda and alcohol. If it is not in the house, then you cannot drink it. Or, make a deal with yourself, if you want something to drink besides water you have to walk (or ride a bike) to the store to go get it.
