Good first try.

Sceneries look good with dramatic skies.

Since you shot in an overcast day, the sky is just plain without even a hint of a cloud. So it doesn't hold your attention. Try to shoot when it is about to rain or just before a storm. You get the most dramatic skies and lighting just before the storm. Use a tripod to steady the camera and shoot.

If the sky is dramatic, then give more space to the sky and reduce the foreground i.e. reduce the garden in your picture. Try some interesting variations.

Take the meter reading from the sky, when the sky is interesting. This will make your tree go dark. Check if bracket or exposure compensation feature is present. Experiment.

Using photoshop to make the sky more blue etc are the usual stunts people do, but they are easily noticed. So wait for the moments when the composition is interesting.

This is actually quite similar to the first pic my wife took with her D50. I like the basic composition and you got the sun at just the right time, peaking through the tree. This makes a nice effect.

To be critical (and helpful)... The sky was blown out and the shadows were hidden. I did about 5 minutes worth of work in Photoshop to show you an alternate view of your own scene. Hey, you are still the photographer, so if you like mine better, claim it as your own. I would have metered a bit more for the shadows so you would show the greens in the tree and grass, because you know the sun is going to get blown out anyway. If you have more pixels available to you, use them! Get a decent size memory card so that you won't worry about running out of space. There was so much more than could have been done with this image if it was not such a small file. If you have a 4 MP camera, use the maximum file size and best resolution you have. You can crop and make adjustments so much easier with a larger file.

Tree on the Fence is nice, but... I'd photoshop out or greatly reduce the small tree on the right edge of the frame to better show of the main subject tree in the center. I would also remove the two lens flare circles in the lower left and camouflage the building on the left side of the frame with some foliage. This picture is interesting in that is is almost a complete black silhouette, but that there is still some green cast mainly in the grass. i tihnk that is looking great. you've captured the sunlight coming through the tree branches perfectly .
it really makes the pic look scerene.
i love it. as people have said - photo workshop or photo impression 5. they are you're best bets for making the colours sharper or enhance the colours.
for one of your first goes - i think it looks fantastic. :)

picasa is a Google's photo software. It's what should've come with your camera.

It can Edit , organise and Share you picture and small video flips.

It's very easy to use and is free, just like Google
