Clipping a bird's wings hurts no more than cutting your hair. It's actually safer to have your birds' wigs clipped and flight limited than to have the bird free flighted where it can fly out widows, crash into mirrors, break its neck when slamming into mirrors, drowning in toilets or tubs or eaten by cats, whether or ot they get along with the feathered room mate.
Not trimming your bird is akin to letting a dog run around free. The dog can be hit by a car, eat poisoned food, get stolen by thieves, attack children or other animals. There's a whole slew of problems that can happen. Saying birds should not be trimmed is akin to saying dogs were meant to run and chase after animals/people and keeping them indoors or behind a fence is inhumane.
The best thing to do would be to protect your pet from your home by trimming it. If you don't want to trim, buy or build an aviary where its flight can be controlled. That way your bird gets the exercise it needs and can fly and chew in things as it wishes. I don't trim my 'wild' and breeding birds. The breeders need flight to keep them in breeding condition and my non- tame birds are small enough that if they escaped the cage my cats would try to snack on them. Plus they're in a large aviary so they have plenty of room to fly. My hand feds are all trimmed because they get an attitude if I don't keep them grounded.
A good trimming should allow a bird to gently glide to the floor. A bird should NEVER be trimmed so severely that it falls to the floor like a rock. The best way to trim is to count the wing feathers from their very tips. Count five to seven feathers from the tip towards the birds' body and using the secondary coverts, trim those five - seven feathers. I'll post wing trimming web sites that will help you out with the visuals. There's several different methods you can use to trim, but that's the way I do it :) .

When done properly, clipping a parakeets wings hurt no more than when we clip our fingernails. If you hold your bird gently, and spread his wing out, you will see two rows of feathers. The second row is the row that is trimmed. It's hard to explain without actually being able to show you. If you try to do it yourself, and you don't know what you're doing you can injure the bird. You can cut blood vessels in their feathers if you don't know how to trim. In that case sometimes it is minor and it only bleeds a little, BUT if you cut it bad enough it could potentially bleed to death. You trim repeatedly because the wings grow back (like fingernails in humans). Really the only reason to trim a parakeets wings is so it can't fly. If you have dogs/cats etc I wouldn't trim it's wings. This way if the bird ever gets out the dogs and cats won't be able to catch it.

If you are not experienced, I don't advise that "you" clip the birds wings. Have your avian vet or an experienced breeder do it. Clipping their wings helps to keep them from flying away and helps you to bond more physically close with your bird If done improperly however, the bird may still have the ability to fly or worse, if not evenly trimmed the bird would be off balanced and could fall and get hurt.

Using that logic, why bother cutting your hair?
No it doesn't hurt the bird if it is done correctly.
Conure Feather's answer is right on the money. Read that answer carefully so that you understand everything.
Then begin doing some research on how to take care of your little bird so that she will live a long happy healthy life. Read books, buy magazines and visit lots of websites. You have the greatest learning tool every invented: The Computer.
Use it to learn.
Considering the fact that you have had a bird for 2 days, I do not think you should do it yourself. You simply don't have the experience.
Please take it to a reputable bird groomer and have it done.

Please don't clip your birds wings!! To answer your question, no it won't hurt them if you cut it in the correct way, but please take my advice. They were meant to fly, and be free. If you cut their wings it's like cutting off your fingers... they have no control when they try to fly. They will grow back, but that doesn't matter. What is important is that your bird is able to fly and be happy.
Additional Info:
Just make sure all your curtains/blinds are closed before you let your little guy out, because he can get scared and fly into a window. Unless, you have trained it already. If you need help training you can contact me at amyalvarez123@yahoo.ca.

If you want to keep your bird from flying, you need to have its wings clipped. It does not hurt, they clipp wings that do not have a blood source. I would recommend going to your vet and having them show you haw to do this before trying it alone.

Don't try it yourself!! It's very tricky. Have the people at the shop or the vet, even a vet assistant show you the first few times.
If you don't get her wings clipped, she could fly into a window and hurt her little noggin.. Or she could fly away:(
