You can do anything you want to, I have a feeling that it is going to be more of a pain in the *** than anything, but if you want to be safe just get some really good seat belts, maybe some harnesses.

If the car doesn't have seatbelts, DEFINITELY worry more about stalling those and definitely before installing an airbag. Without seatbelts, the airbag will kill you. But if it's a classic car, it's likely to fold up like a tin can in a severe accident anyway. Go with the seatbelts.

No because all of the interior panels on modern cars are plastics designed around how crash test dummy smashes into it and seating posistion rate of deployment placing of the bags height all are important. Besides the liability of a car with incorrectly installed saftey parts. Air bags do save lifes classic cars are heavy steel and not very crashworthy. Modern car crumple zones and interior cabin structure save even more lifes. So keep it slow and smooth in the classic old parts like it like that.

Yes. Save yourself time, heartache and money and stick to a good seatbelt system. SRS is super complicated, very expensive and is designed around the unistructure/crumple zone statistics of modern era vehicles. It is possible it would do more harm than good in a collision if not calibrated correctly.
