Does pound cake expand in bread pans or does it cook at the level to which it is filled?

its my first time making it today, and i think i should throw it in a 13x9 pan, but it fits perfectly in my large bread pan. it is about 1/3 inch away from the top filled with batter.

At the Level which it's filled

You should use a tube pan, bundt pan, or bread pan. Fill to 1/2 full. It will double in size. A 9 x 13 pan will make the cake too thin and not as crusty as it should be. Good luck.

Pound cake should, as you might have noticed, be rather dense. Of course, that's because it doesn't rise all that much. In theory, then, it should be just fine.

Except that this isn't theory. Any air that is inside the mix, any chemicals that were inadvertantly mixed could inadvertantly cause a bubble, or even simply the normal expansion of materials when heated, will probably keep you right outside the oven staring in through the window.

It could work, but you should be a little frightened. Besides, why wouldn't you be safe instead of having to scrape some nastiness from the inside of the over?

Your pan shouldn't be more than 1/2 full of batter. 3/4 tops. It really depends on what the recipe calls for.

A full pan like the one you described is just begging for a messy oven. If you're going with that, set it on a cookie sheet just in case.
