They are both good cars, but if you do need more room, then I would say the Accord would be the way to go. There will be more room for passengers to. It won't get as good mpg as a civic, but its not horrible!!

I have owned an Accord and a couple of Civics (coup and sedan) and I've used all of them on all types of roads in most conditions (I ski and like to spend a lot of time in the mountains and at the coast). I think that you might prefer the Accord for a number of reasons, including the size. The Civic is cute but feels a little small compared to the Accord, especially when you have all of your gear in the car with you (and friends!). And the cute Civic doesn't feel as safe as the Accord. Both come with front-wheel drive which is good in the snow, but I feel that with a slightly larger engine, the Accord has better handling.

Larger cars are overrated. More expensive, more expensive on gas, more expensive on insurance...not to mention the fact that the "space" that most people buy is rarely used. Just look at the cars on the road the next time that you're driving and you'll see plenty of large cars that are occupied by one driver carrying nothing more than a briefcase.
I'm an avid outdoors person and my Civic does fine...I've traveled all over California, Canada and the South and it was awesome.
And despite what Mr. Mechanic said, the Accord gets worse mileage than the Civic. Check out the Edmunds.com link below:

Whatever you do, dont get the 06 Civic, they are ugly on the interior. Go with the Accord which are better looking. Also, look at some hybrid SUV which are good with gas. The Ford Escape Hybrid is pretty good. The Escape Hybrid gets 36/31 mpg and the Civic Hybrid gets 49/51and the Accord Hybrid gets 25/34 and also, the escape is only about $4000 more but you may be able to find one used but good for cheaper. go to autos.yahoo.com and compare vechicles. You will be amazed.

i just bought a civic. i LOVE IT. the trunk is very roomy and the gas mileage is great. an accord is way more expensive. but if you are looking for room, have you checked out the new honda fit? it is larger so there would be more space for you, but it is very affordable as well, i think it starts at 14k. but i love my civic, i just got it about a month ago and it is wonderful
