Try not to let her get to tired out what type of breed is it. I had a litter of boxer pups she had eight all were fine. she got a little tired and we took a washcloth dry and helped stimulate a few of the puppies toward the end. once she has another she will leave that one alone. congrats and good luck its alot of work

Of course it is! At first she is cleaning them, she probably ate the amniotic sac and placenta if you noticed. URGH!It is just like a human stroking the face of a baby. It is seen as a bonding session between her and her pups. Dogs also have antiseptic tounges which helps kill bacteria growing on the pups. Just leave her too it, it's surprising how much maternal instinct they have!

If its her first litter she's an inexperienced mother, don;t be surprised i she loses one or two. It takes them a couple of litters to get the hang of it.
If the licking appears agitated or frantic; and/or if she keeps licking the umbilical area and especially if she keeps trying to eat the cord then there is cause for concern.
In that case she could end up eating the pups, its just one of those things. If she does then please have her spayed and don't breed from her again.

Absolutely normal because the pup is covered in guey stuff and the mother needs to clean it. After that, it's probably 'cos she likes the taste ;)

It´s very natural that a ***** takes care of her pups by licking them clean and prodding them with her nose. Be patient with her and see the development. It won´t continue too long. Congrats!

It's really healthy for the pup to be licked - let them get on with it - it will not last forever

she is trying to clean it and to stimulate it to nurse. keep an eye on her since this is her first litter because she is inexperienced and may harm the pups without meaning to. you could call your vet and ask what to do.

Yes it is fine. The mother licking the puppy stimulates it's breathing and cleans it up. Let her be and let her do as nature intended.
