2 Tim 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

these veres don't say the Scriptures are are the ONLY authority.

The warning at the end of the Apocalypse is about that book not the whole bible.

I do believe that the Scriptures are authorative and one authority, but not the only the other is the oral teaching of jesus and the apotles ie holy tradition.
and tradition is attested in the bible.

Of course Jesus is the source of authority.

THe Catholic Church pre-dates the New Testament by 300 years.

Nice to have both.

Peace!

The New Testament is quoted by early church fathers befroe the end of the 2nd century all except for about 11 verses, clearly the early church accepted the New testament long before the 'claimed 300 years' I doubt even the catholic church would agree wit that

Clearly we do not see the death of Peter or death of Paul or the fall of Jerusalem all which happend around 60-70ad in the New Testament giving evidense it was written substantially before that

I think it depends what you mean by only authority... clealry there are levels of authority... but the highest authority is God and therefor God;s word

Think of the pcture in Revelation... the 12 foundations of the New Jerusalem were the Apostles... if it was really not the New Testament but church tradition largely.. you would need many dozends of foundations one for each Pope... am I wrong?

Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." -Matthew 28:19

Scripture is an authority by virtue of the way Jesus talked about it. EG:

But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?" -Matthew 26:54

Jesus didnt treat Scripture as off hand remarks by Godly men that maybe we can think about doing if we feel like it. If Scripture has the ability to train, rebuke, correct, and prove points, then it is authoritative.

The only temptation that remains for people that believe that Scripture is authoritative is to not let Jesus lead them himself (something the teachers of the law were guilty of) I believe the heart of your Q really asked the Q: What is our ultimate authority? While Scripture is authoritative and is the word of God, Jesus is THEE word of God, the churchs ultimate authority.

Yeah, good point. No person can claim authority over another person just based upon a socalled "holy and indisputable" book, written by men, over a long period in history, crossing all kinds of cultural, language and time barriers that distort the meaning, capturing and preserving primitive values like the lowly position of women. Blind religion like that is why we have terrorism now and is why whe had religious wars in the past. What you find in the Bible, Qur'an and Gita is valuable though. They are the primitive basis of the social value systems of mankind. But they are not an undisputable autority.

Well the Bible makes the claim that the Word of God is the only authority so since we hold the Bible as the word of God thats where we get that from

Understandable claim, but the Bible does say it is perfect for living, correction, reproof. This means, the Bible is all we need for living a life pleasing to God.

The Bible, authored by God is my authority for all spiritual and life decision matters.

At the end of the Bible there is a warning not to add anything to it or taken anything away from it - see Revelation 22:18-19.

With out the ability to have the christ in you awaken, you'll have to depend on something why not a book that told me God said that I supposed to sacrafice a fatten calf, then later changed his word that, he don'nt need that no more, here are the rules revised. If it works for some who am I to knock it!

Because some Christians, like some any ones, are not very bright. Simple as that. The bible is a boring book, badly written, filled with contradiction, and probably all lies as to authorship. Big deal...everyone needs something to cling to. Unfortunately, we are on a pendulum swing that favors conservatism. The pendulum always swings to and fro. Give it another 10 years, and we will be running nude in the streets.

Christians don't say that! The Bible is the Word of God. God is our authority.
