Just curious what the al- means before a last name in Islam. For example: al-Hadeed. At first I thought it meant "child of" then the fathers name, but this isn't the case.

Hadeed=Iron

al its like the in english, its as an object .the word alhadeed means iron. most of arabes last name end with al its more less like indentity.

As has been said, it's the 'definite article', equivalent to 'the'. Of course, we're speaking here about the language Arabic, not the religion Islam. There are non-Muslim Arabs and non-Arab Muslims.

To the best of my knowlegde, 'son of' is 'bin' or 'ibn'.

i think it means "the"... welll i'm not sure abt it....
for example... al-quran.. "the quran
or " al-arth"... "the earth"...
i'm makin this out from my basic Quran education!
