Any exercise "works" if you know what you are doing. |All exercise programs work for about 6 weeks, which is why most fitnes product (inlcuding the Bowflex) don't have guarantees that are much longer than that.

The Bowflex is a smart engineering design for the company, but not necessarily for the consumer. It is very safe for inexperienced users, but also does not produce strength that is useful in actual activity; both for the same reason. The "power rod" tehnology subjects the body to changing forces. Just like any "bow", the more you bend it the harder it is to bend. This means that you may not be lifting the weight it says until the top of a motion, when you have the most mechanical advantage at the joint. As you get to the weakest position, the force is taken off of the limb(s). So you gain the most strength where you least need it. Thus, you are less likely to get hurt while using the Bowflex, but more likely to get hurt if you use your newfound "strength" in a real world situation.

I wouldn't go with Bowflex.
I purchased the Total Gym at Wal Mart online and I totally LOVE it!

It is actually a very relaxing workout. There are no weights to move and change b/c you are lifting a certain percentage of your body weight, depending on where you move the incline bench to.

You can do Pilates on it if that interests you-that's also a great workout.

It shapes you up fast, and is so easy to use-comes with all kinds of extensions to use for different exercises.

It's also cheaper than Bowflex. I bought the 1500 for $350.00 plus shipping. If you live in Texas, you get free shipping to store.
