Genetic engineers work with genes. Their main work is to manipulate genes, and then transfer specific traits found in them to conventional crop varieties. Note that here I am referring to genetic engineers working in the field of crop biotechnology.

To be a genetic engineer, you must have an undergraduate degree. There is no experience needed for one to become a genetic engineer. You are a genetic engineer as soon as you you graduate from the university.

Salary will depend on your employer. If you land a job at a reputable biotechnology company like Monsanto, Bayer, or Dupont, you're sure to be paid a starting salary of about $55,000. But if you opt to work in the civil service, the starting salary, definitely will be less, let's say $40,000.

You will need a degree in biology or microbiology. When you have a 4 year degree, you will likely begin to gain experience in the field by working for a company. You could also focus your learning by getting a graduate degree and pushing your thesis in the direction of genetics.

The experience needed will be specific to what area of genetics you study. Salary will be commensurate with location, your training and degree level. Most 4 year degree science people start in the low to mid 40k range depending on location.

I don't know all that, but I'd like to know just how much they THINK they know about genetics when so many people are getting sick from eating GM foods (or even BREATHING GM pollen) !
