We are deciding on buying a dog, standard poodle. We have one toy poodle (almost a dog) and some kids the youngest being 8 months. Should we get a dog..we are going to look in a few minutes and we are on the fence.

OK FINAL AD of details:

We can't adopt (allthough we did adopt our kids) becuase one of my kids are allergic to dogs. Only a select number have no dander. If a shelter had a purebread with good temperment we would be there!
Also this is a lot to get input and for fun, anybody think medicgvd answer was kinda jerkish?

If you have been thinking about this for 3 months and have not made a decision there is a reason. Obviously there is a part of you that is not ready to get another dog. To get another dog you should be completely ready. You will know when the time comes that it is right.

Yeah, sure, get another one. The more the merrier.
I highly recomend your local shelter. If you call ahead, you will be able to bring your poodle. That way you can be certain that the dogs will get along. The poodle can pick out his own little friend. The kids will need to be on a leash though-no, just kidding.

Consider an adult. With a baby in the house, house training a puppy will be a bother you just don't need.

Good Luck, have fun.

Why buy when you can get one for free?

Second choice would be to go to the animal shelter and adopt one. Let the dog choose you, not the other way around. If they shelter will let you handle the dog, go for it.

Either of the above will save "Spot" from being put to sleep!

Well I think most of the people here got it right, if you have to think this hard about it you probably are not ready for another dog.
As to what the medic said, I happen to agree,. I've seen what a dog can do to an unfamiliar child and it can get pretty bad. Maybe you have the chip on your shoulder. You seem to only want to hear one answer.

What. It is your house, your kids and if you by a dog your dog, why ask me who you do not know.

But ask yourself with kids and one dog already do you have the time for another dog. a dog is a long time thing and needs as much attention as a child, I have one dog and one son 17 and that is all the time I have, so now you need to decide.

If you have children and you can't make a decision of the long term consequences of having a dog in your house and you are leaving it up to total strangers to decide for you then you are too irresponsible to have a dog let alone children! GROW UP!

Additional info:
My answer may be "jerkish" but when you take the dog home after your whimsical, impulse purchase and it eats your 8 month old's face off, you might think differently! The dog may seem well and good in the store but you have no idea what it will do around your child. When the FIre department and ambulance show up and tell you that your child needs to be flown to a level 1 pediatric trauma center for facial reconstruction feel free to call me a jerk when I show up. You just want a dog to have one, not to actually care for one. As I said before. GROW UP!

It's more reponsibility. Don't make an impulsive decision on getting something that could last for up to 20 years.
