I have been told Colgate Total and Crest Complete has the most significant breakthroughs in tooth paste ever. All other tooth paste is mainly breath deoderant and smooshes off gunk with some floride added, where the other two I mentioned actually does some amazing things for teeth and gums.
Never use a toothpaste with baking soda in it as it actually damages enamel.
Sonic Care and Oral-B electric tooth brushes are the best tooth brushes on the market according to research. Manual tooth brushes must only be soft bristles never hard or medium as it damges gums and enamel.

For me, I prefer Colgate total the most since it contains Fluoride which is the requirement for the all toothpastes. Moreover, the key ingredient is "Tricolosan" which is proven to fight gingival inflammation and it gives 12-hour antibacterial action. This is really important cuz normally after you brush your teeth, the plaque (several kinds of bacteria) will get accumulated on your tooth surface within 6 hours but if you use the toothpaste contained Triclosan, it will help to prolong the re-accummulation of the plaque and your teeth will stay cleaned longer than using normal toothpaste.
However, for people who have problem of tooth sensitivity, it's better to use Sensodyne which help a lot more to prevent tooth sensitivity.
For the tooth brush, I personally don't like any fancy tooth brush cuz sometimes different angles of bristles could damage your gum instead of helping to clean your teeth. Oral-B is a good choice. Remember to choose the one with soft and straight bristles since it's better to prevent gingival recession and tooth abrasion. Further, I would encourage you to use dental floss too.

Its personal taste, literally and figuratively. As long as they've received the ADA stamp of approval (in the US), they're going to be high quality.
1) not too much abrasiveness, and it must have flouride. Consumer Reports did a review either this month or last month.
2) Softer the better. Colgate makes one that's really soft, but I can never find it in stores - I can only get it from my dentist.

1. I use Eco dent toothpowder instead of toothpaste and it works really well for me.
2. As for tooth brush... there all essentally the same, with only minor differences. For me, I use Smile brite, it has replaceable heads and it's made out of natural fibers instead of nylon.

1) Tom's of Maine (recently bought out by Colgate) - I've been using it for years and haven't had any dental issues. It's also all natural - no artificial sweetening agents - so I can drink orange juice right after brushing my teeth and it still tastes good.
2) Oral-B - it's what my dentist always gives me.
