They will TELL you that they require a high school diploma or GED equivalent, but with four years in the Navy, I have seen numerous people take the equivalency exam while on active duty.
You can get what they call a 'sign-on' bonus, which they will give you upon your completion of boot camp and your appropriate schooling. I have friends who recieved $8,000 for a 6 month school.

Bound's hubby here:
The military may pay you a bonus to enlist; however, you do not get any part of that bonus until you have completed basic and advanced training, to the best of my knowledge. Check the link, below for pay scales (E = enlisted, w = warrant officer, o = officer, you would be most interested in the E scales).
It is my understanding, that around either 1981 or 1991, the military enlistment requirements were changed, and required that any person enlisting must have a high school diploma ... no GEDs, no exceptions. If this has be changed recently, I do not know.

You are paid during Basic Training. How much now, I do not know, but when I went in it was $99 a month. That was in 1960. The pay is so much better now than ever for the military. I've recently learned that an E7 can draw as much as $3,500 a month as compared to my piddly $1,200 in 1980.
To my understanding, a high school diploma is required for enlisting.

You need at least a GED, and even then it's iffy. A high school diploma is much better. The Army has a program where if you lack a GED they will help you get one BEFORE you join up. We don't take people without GEDs. But we do take people with GEDs, you're just less desireable of a recruit.
There are signing bonuses for certain jobs at certain times. I've known people to get nothing when they signed up, and others got $20,000. Everyone gets paid on a monthly basis.

Your pay date is the day you report to bootcamp/basic training. But you don't actually get your first pay check in your account until the following 1st or 15th.
You can join with a GED however, it depends on the branch. Sometimes the Air Force won't let you in with a GED, it depends on situation though. One thing good about the military is there is waviers for everything.

You may get a signing bonus according to which branch you sign up with & wetheer or not they are making their quota of new recruits. Even if you do get a bonus you won't get it until sometime after you've completed Boot Camp. Most of the time you do have to have a diploma but you can get a waiver, depending on how hard your recruiter wants to work for you. You can forget about the Air Force or Coast Guard but you may be able to get in the Army or Navy and possibly the Marines. Talk to a recruiter and if one tells you NO try going to the next town over and talking to another one. Recruiters have to make numbers and if he's already got his recruits lined up and ready to go he may not want to put in the work to get you in. I know that people may tell you you can't get in because of your Diploma status but I met several Sailors (NAVY) who had no High School Diploma but got waivers to get in.

Yes, you need a GED or a high school diploma to join.
I don't think the military pays you immediately, but they pay you, as if you were their employee. They also pay for your college education.
