Although canon is the best in digital cameras but they can;t be good on everything. Similarly, sony is the top brand in camcorders but not good in digital cameras.
I personally own a sony DV camcorder and I am very very happy with it. I bought it from where i used to work.
Now comparing the two sony camcorders, i would definitely go for the DCR-HC42 because it is a high spec camcorder although the optical zoom on 12x as compared to 20x on HC23. But the quality is excellent. In terms of feature, they both are identical.
