They promise stuff after death because there's no way to disprove it. If they promised it in this life, it would be obvious it was a lie.

Firstly there's no proof scientifically speaking. Religion deals with the other. That is a realm of understanding or being that exists outside of our own measurable experience. Religious truth as it were cannot be proven by science, only by faith. Of course, faith is not regarded as proof by most due to it's completely unscientific nature and yet faith is held by many pepole in non-religious things. The most ironic being that scientific method works. A scientist must have faith that if they did carry out an experiment an infinite number of times it would produce the same result. So in short, it can't be proven but then it doesn't necessarily need to be
Promises in the afterlife only come to those who have faith. Thus there isn't a need to prove they are exisiting as only the believer will recieve them. A Christian friend once said to me "If I'm right then I'll be happy and you'll be screwed but if you're right we'll both be nothing so I'll take my option"
Why not here on Earth now? Well the majority of western and large Eastern faiths all provide ethics of perfection. These rules are intended for a society to live by with the reasoning that if they are followed, the faith's version of Paradise or Heaven or Nirvana etc will be found on Earth. Buddhists will argue that Enlightenment can be achieved whilst alive. Christians and Muslims will point to their laws and say that were the world to follow them, we would have no need for heaven. Chrisitianity specifically says that man is capable of perfection as Jesus was fully man as well as fully God. As such, if we follow the laws of God then there would be Heaven on Earth so to speak
Hope this has been some help. In short, it's a make your own mind up kind of question!

There are plenty of promises in the Bible for this life, if you believe in God, trust and follow Him.
There are far fewer (though of greater ultimate importance) about the afterlife.
There are some which pertain to both and let us see a connection between this life and the next, like in the Beatitudes. For example, "Blessed (happy, fortunate) are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven", "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God."
These are not vague promises for the afterlife, but things we can begin to have and appreciate now, which give us a foretaste of Heaven.

You can attain the spiritual platform now, firstly you have to realise that your original spiritual body is your real identity, the material body, subtle material mind, intelligence & false identification with the ever shifting sands of inferior energy is what you are not.
As soon as you make the distinction between matter, that which you are not & spirit soul that which you are, then you can position yourself to learn how to revive the original self, which is eternal, full of knowledge/cognizant & is blissful beyond compare to anything material.

Drink water from the spring not from the estuary, where it is full of pollution. The spiritual masters tell you that heaven is within you. It is not in death that you will find it, but in life. Those who think much of life after death do not yet know of life, though they live.
The ego is finite and will end, but the true self is infinite life itself. Know your true self. Let the ego die while you still live, and be reborn again into life eternal.

You have to go way back for the answer to this. To the day of judgement. You can't judge people on unequal terms so you set the standard. Die first and we start. Sounds like a good idea to me.

It's to get you to believe in the fairy tales. Remember how your Mum used to say, "Eat all your dinner and you can have some pudding."? It's the same principal. The promise of something good after something not so good.

If you tell someone that they must obey you in order to have a good afterlife it's easier to control them. That's what religion is about, controlling people.
