Fruit or Vegetable?
An interesting aspect of tomato history is the classic debate: Is the Tomato a Fruit or Vegetable? I guess that depends on whom you are asking. By definition, a fruit is the edible plant structure of a mature ovary of a flowering plant, usually eaten raw; some are sweet like apples, but the ones that are not sweet such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc. are commonly called vegetables. Botanists claim that a fruit is any fleshy material that covers a seed or seeds where as a horticulturists point of view would pose that the tomato is a vegetable plant. Until the late 1800's the tomato was classified as a fruit to avoid taxation, but this was changed after a Supreme Court ruling that the tomato is a vegetable and should be taxed accordingly.

This question was actually brought to the Supreme Court of the USA in 1916... and it was ruled by the Supreme Court that a tomato is in fact a vegetable. And i am 100% certain/serious about this!
The supreme court overturned the "fruit" arguement that had stood since the 1800's to allow the tomato to be taxed accordingly as any other vegetable. Previously by classifying it as a fruit, importers and exporters were able to avoid certain taxation on vegetables in order to save money!

Fruits have the seeds contained in the body of the bulbous tissues.
Grains are grass seeds... Corn for example is a grain, not a vegetable. Rice, Barley etc.
Beans are seeds that grow in pods. (Wheat is genetically a bean and is grass seed...)
Nuts have hard, often thick, shells when dry.
Seeds also include other such as sun flower seeds which do not fall into above catagories.
Flowers are things like broccoli, cauliflower, artichoke... the main body mass blooms when left alone and not harvested first.
Vegetables are leafy.
Tubers such as potatoes, carrots, yams, jicama all grow new plants from the fruit directly, i.e. are both seed and fruit, and generally grow below ground, as do aliums (garlic, onions, leeks etc.).
The human digestion is suited most for grains and fruit, followed by other seeds and flowers, finally vegetables and meat when supplimentation is necessary.
