Better think this one over carefully. A dog is a long investment in time and can be a considerable expense. What do you want/need? Protection? Like a Pit Bull? Better be prepared to face hostile community leaders. And your homeowners insurance will go nuts. Are you VERY active and want a VERY active dog? Like a Jack Russel? They stay active even when you are too tired to move. Need a great "family" dog to live around children, an excellent member of your family, intelligent, loving, devoted? Look into Golden Retrievers or Labs. They, absolutely, make the best pets and companions - and you will never have to worry about it biting someone. Besides, women absolutely love Golden's. Lots of fine fur balls at shedding time with a golden though. They're worth it,though, if you have a vacuum cleaner!
Do some research on your own - the Internet is full of information on dogs - and investigate the characteristics and health considerations of various breeds that you may be interested in. What you decide will be with you, probably, for a long time.

My last 3 dogs have been Pit bulls. Very cool I love the breed. But more important than cool is what breed fits your lifestyle. What kind of home do you have( Good Yard ?) how much time do you have to spend with your dog (different dogs have different energy levels and so different activity needs) What do you drive , You can't get an English Mastiff if you drive a compact car. Consider all these issues before choosing a breed.

I had a Staffordshire Bull Terrier (not a Pit Bull) for 10 years, and he was the sweetest, kindest, friendliest dog ever. They are very easily trained, have lots of energy, and are perfect for kids. They don't like other dogs much, so if you are wanting more than one, buy them together. My dog loved cats though, even though my cat came after he did. I'd love to have another dog.

6 years ago we went out to all of the animal shelters to save a dog...and we found the most perfect one...a two year old Pit Mix. Her behavior was like a sweet little baby. And they had no previous owner info...cuz she was just dropped off. But after spending time in the meeting room...we fell in love. Took her home to our two cats and that was a perfect match as well. She is so sweet and everybody loves her. My daughter has grown up with her and she "tortures" her and it's all good. I wouldn't believe all you hear about Pits...cuz ours is the best! She protects us as well...if anybody walks around our house at all she barks. :)
So good luck...I personally think it's the specific dog itself and not a breed. So go out and find one!!!

i've had a few different breeds since childhood and I'd have to say my current dog, a cross lab/staffie is the best I've ever had. great personality, great looks, not overly big or small, cuddly and loving but good as a guard dog and overall just a brilliant pet.

As long as you can take care of it most dogs are "cool". Having a dog won't help YOU look cool though.

The one you see at the animal shelter, and you think, "Ahhhhh, I wanna take you home and love you".
What's with the, "Cool dog", thing? They are living breathing beings. Try a hot dog if you want to be cool.

All dogs are cool. Very, very cool. Except little yappy ones....and ones dressed up in clothes, that's sick.
I'd like a retriever or a collie...hehe
