There isn't a consistent difference. Either one can be sweet or not, hot or not, and juicy or not.

I have not found a significant difference in red & white onions. I use yellow onions to cook with. They have more flavor that lasts through the cooking process. I use red or white onions for cucumber/onion salad because they are not over powering when used raw. I also use them in deviled eggs, potato, macaroni or green salads, tuna salad etc. for the same reason when I do not have green onions on hand. I hardly ever use sweet onions (walla walla or vadalia).

In England the white onions tend to be stron and are better fried off gently or used in all cooking. (And good for you!)

Red onions tend to be milder and are sweeter. Best in salads and salsas and also look very attractive. (And good for you!)

Try them out or cook them up together.Enjoy!
