I have had six cats for fourteen years and have never "cleaned out" any ears.

Why do you think you need to do this? If there is black or dark brown gunk in the ear that is probably earmites and the best way to get rid of them is by having the vet give a shot. If you mess around with it you can just drive the mites further down into ear canal and cause possible damage to the ear drum.

Don't clean your cat's ears. If there is dark gunk in the ears (stuff that looks like coffee grounds) then that is a sign of ear mites. If the cat has ear mites, you need to go to the vet to get it taken care of. How would you like your ears to be full of bugs???
