Like if you drop the lid of the jam jar it never seems to land sticky side up or if you drop toast it always lands buttered side down.

Actually in all seriousness, it could easily be a weight distribution thing...that is, the jam side is bound to be heavier than the unjammed side (if its possible to weigh such a thing!), therefore if dropped at an angle gravity would pull the jammed side down first.

Makes sense really when you think about it, although its bloody annoying!

It seems that there might actually be some truth to the idea that toast tends to land buttered side down, despite the Mythbusters program to the contrary. Here is what I found ....

"Toast does indeed have a natural tendency to land butter side down, essentially because the gravitation torque induced as the toast topples over the edge of the plate/table is insufficient to bring the toast butter-side up again by the time it hits the floor."

Check out these links. Who knows? Maybe Murphy's Law is right. Also do a Yahoo QA search as this question has been asked before and has a few answers.

Imaka is perfectly correct. Where gravity is much stronger, like on Jupiter, dropped things fall so fast that they would hit the floor almost they same way round as when they started. Where it is only half as strong, like on Mars, they have time to turn completely round before they hit the floor, so they would usually be sticky side up again. Where gravity is only a fraction as strong, like on the moon, they would go round and round so often before they hit the floor that it would just be a 50-50 chance. Earth is the worst place in the solar system to drop sticky things.

They don't. What actually happens is that if toast & jam falls toast side down you just pick it up, eat it & forget it. If it falls jam side down you pick it up, offer it to your granny & then tell all of your mates about it down the pub. Then they tell theirs & they tell theirs. So an insignificant event assumes greater importance than it deserves & so 'sticks in the collective mind'. Thus you create the urban myth that the jammy side ALWAYS falls on the ground rather than the toasty side. QED.

Maybe you should test it along with the theory that cats always land on their feet. You just need to grab a cat, butter it's back and drop it! One theory has to be wrong!

Ain't that the truth!!! I have often wondered that as well. I guess it's gravity?? Maybe the substances that make it item sticky are heavier so the item turns toward the heavier side???

Fate!!! for maximum mess!!!

Actually I think the side with "stuff" on it is marginally heavier than the plain side...so it's off balance and ends up heavy side down.

Methinks this tale is just an urban myth and has been proven so in various scientific tests.

The side with the stuff on it is heavier.

I think that is one of Murphy's Law's. I must have to do with fate.
