The whole idea of a play group is to expose your child to other children and teach him/her socialization skills. It's great for them. It teaches them how to interact with other children and while having fun. They can also pick up some bad habits from other children, but being a good parent can minimize the effect.

I've gone to many different playgroups with both my kids. Some of the moms may already be friends, but they are used to new people joining as well. They are a lot of fun and a great way to meet woman that you have a lot in common with. When you go, just try not to be shy and participate in the conversations. After you've been twice, I'm sure you'll be one of the girls. Your son will love it as well. God Bless

i had the same problem, and yes they usually do have their own groups but the best way round this is when you all sit down to a cup of tea or coffee, i find that the person next to you is the best person to start a conversation with. you could start off saying something like its my first time here how good is the group, or how long have you being going to the playgroup? you will find that a conversation like that usually leads on to more talk. just try and not think about it too much

It depends on the group. If its a really big group people do tend to kind of split off into their own little groups. I prefer smaller play dates with just a few(4-5) other moms. That way you get the chance to meet people instead of trying to find someone who isn't already in their own little group. My best advice no matter the size of the group is to relax, don't be nervous and enjoy yourself and your son as you share this new experience. Good luck!!

I've never been to one, but my guess is they will probably just have you introduce yourself and your son and then I'm sure your son will find a little playmate and I'm sure the child's parent will end up talking with you and it will all be fine. They usually do activities as well so everyone is included. Don't be nervous, I'm sure you will have a good time and I'm definately sure your son will :-)

Are you joining a MOMs Club? If so, they are use to new people. Just jump right in- it'll be ok! :)
