Cut flowers can be kept fresh for a longer time by recutting the stems at an angle under gently flowing water from the tap before putting them in fresh, lukewarm water. Also, adding a crushed aspirin to the water has been known to help, or a few drops of bleach. It also helps to change the water in the vase every day or every other day.

Dissolve an aspirin (not Tylenol or other non-aspirin pain reliever) in cold water before putting in the cut flowers. Be sure stems are cut at about a 45 degree angle. You really should recut the stems every day, taking off approximately 1/4 inch from the previous day's cutting.

For roses, specifically, when they start to wilt you can completely submerge them in a bathtub with a few inches of cold water. Leave them there for a few hours and they will refreshen.

my biology teacher in school was a keen gardener and he told us that the trick to keep cut flowers fresh is to cut the stems at a 45 degree angle to open up the xylem and phloem ( the tubes that allow water and food to travel through the plant) and immerse in water with a drop of bleach for a few minutes and transfer to a vase with fresh water , with a spoonful of sugar in the water ..to give the flowers food...change the water every 2nd day and they should last for ages...
