If in doubt because of dampness, hence mildew and mold or vapors from construction materials, contact a local laboratory to sample the air and check. Explain your reason for having the air checked. They will also want to take surface swabs as well to be sure since most airborne contaminates come from solid surfaces. You pediatrician may also be able to help direct you as well since they work frequently with labs.

I would say it depends on whether the basement is damp or dry. I would get a dehumidifier. Also, ask your Dr.
