Its ironic but you can become a CDAC ( Certified Drug and Alcahol Counselor) with only a high school education IF you are a recovering addict and attend approximately 800 clock hours of training. Let me advise you the salaries are not great. Even with a Master's degree you could make more money working as ahouseparent in a group home for the mentally ill.

Depends on what type of counselling you want to do, which client population you want to be involved with (ie teens, adults, the mentally challenged, the mentally ill, etc) and which capacity would you like to be involved. Social Workers can counsel people but they are also involved in case management which involves monitoring the client and ensuring that their needs are met ie housing, food, medication, shelter, etc. Child and Youth Care Workers work in residential (group home or Suppoted Living) and vocational placements and support teens with crisis management, skills training, etc.Psychologists are involved in psychometric testing, assessment and talk therapy. Community Rehab/Developmental Service workers work with the mentally challenged with substance abuse issues and the mentally ill or Dually Diagnosed populations.Psychiatrists are medical doctors that assess people , provide therapy and prescribe medication. Psychiaric Nurses are involved in inpatient care in hospitals and rehab or residential settings. I guess the bottom line is to research these professions and find out what intrests you and what the pay is- you can choose what you would like to do based upon your academic strengths and personal strengths. Hope this helps.

You'll need to get a master's degree in social work and take a licensing exam for your state. It might take awhile, but if you have the drive, you can do it!
all the best
